sugar and spice

more girl practice over the last 2 nights. I don't know how much this is really stretching or challenging me, but they are girls, so thats new.

this one is meant to be a 1940's girl...

and this one the 80's...

Thats it for now. Im hoping/planning to draw a girl from each decade starting around the 1920's. That might end my training.

practice, dummy

I thought I should try to learn to draw girls again, so I rev'ed up the old Cintiq and had a go at it.

Thats it

DesignerCon 2012

whats up convention turkeys!

This past Saturday, I hosted a table at DesignerCon in Pasadena. It was my 2nd time there (last year's convention was my first convention ever), and at least as awesome as the first time!

Anyway, I got to meet a bunch of awesome folks, I got to draw for like 7 hours, and I sold some stuff! It was a good day...THANK YOU to everyone who came out to take a look and say hello!

Here are some pics from the show. Sorry :/ I wasn't taking too many pics aside from the sketch cards I was doing...

that's just like, your opinion, man

hello everyone

I've been trying to get ready for the "Mash Potatoes and Gravy" art show this Friday, the 2nd, and Designer Con on Saturday the 3rd. WIth all my other work (wah!), I havent had too much time to take care of my personal work.

But, over this week I was able to do a couple fan art pieces in tribute to "my favorite movie of all time", the Big Lebowski. as i started drawing the Dude, i put on the movie for inspiration. there are so many good lines! so, i figured id try my hand at one of these quote-backgrounds...

Here are the finished pieces. They're printed, cut, bagged and ready for sale at Designer Con w00t!

So anyway, I'm glad I was able to get something new done in time for the shows, but i really need to manage more time into my schedule for this stuff. strangely, ive been drawing like craze over the past month, just nothing for myself i can show online.

sah!

processed

Hey guys

I finished a painting recently, and tried to take photos periodically to kinda document my process. The lighting in my garage sucks for photos, and I was using my phone camera, but i put together an animated .gif

so, check this out

Thats it. I've been super busy because I quit my job and started freelancing from home. So far, that has meant long hours in front of my cintiq..which is good. But, it also means I havent been taking the time to work on any of my own projects.

Anyhoo, Designer Con is right around the corner, followed by Patchwork so I need to get busy.

check you later

good, bad, and eveything in between

hello for the 3rd time in one night! yes, just catching up some more. last post tonite, i swear...

i wanted to do a digital Breaking Bad illustration in time for Comikaze. So, I got started and hammered one out in the couple days before the show. it was a good lesson, that i can get an illustration done relatively quickly, and be happy with the results. the prints turned out great, and were very well received at Comikaze. it turned out to be one of the pieces at my table that grabbed a lot of peoples' attentions. it also doesnt hurt that Breaking Bad is super popular right now...

here is the "Money Green" color variant...

...and the "Meth Blue" color variant...

Mr White looks like a monster, but im pretty happy with the effect.

Well, i'll be back soon with some more illustrations and news. i have quite a few shows coming up in the next couple months, so i have a TON of work and preparation to get through. fortunately, im feeling quite motivated right now...BOOM!

PAUL

Comikaze 2012!!!

so, if youre following along, youll remember i mentioned hosting a table at Comikaze 2012. im not going to beat around the bush...it was awesome...so much fun! i met a TON of great folks, did a BUNCH of commission sketches, and sold a bunch of merchandise. The show seemed to be a success, and the organizers have already confirmed it will be 3 days next year instead of just 2. i'll be there again, for sure!

well, instead of mucking up the post with words, i'll just get into some pictures...

instead of posting all the sketch cards, i decided to focus on the fans and the booth here. if you want to see all the sketch card up close (or at least the ones i remembered to photograph...) check out the Comikaze 2012 album on my facebook page.

anyway, like i said, AWESOME CONVENTION! Thanks to everyone who made it special and fun!

its september...what!

time flies. time has been flying. ive been super busy (i know..."wah!") and I have too much to post! or, ive neglected this blog so long that i feel like one post isn't enough to cover it all! well, thats too bad, paul wilson, because 1 post is all i'm giving you!

i've been working on breaking bad pieces, as you, my loyal readers, may know. so, i'll start there.

i recently posted a sketch i did of Walter White (Mr. White, Heisenberg) on a 6" x 6" wood panel. well, i drew up a Jesse Pinkman to keep him company...

And, i took an evening to paint up the Walter White...

I like the idea of these small paintings. they dont kill me too bad on time, they give me instant gratification, and they are more affordable to anyone who wants to buy an original painting. so, i want to do more. I havent had a chance to paint up the Jesse panel, but soon! soon...

also, what i said about only giving myself one post? i lied, because i hosted a table at Comikaze this year, and it was too awesome not to give it it's own post...

thanks

Crunch a Bunch

ive been extraordinarily busy at work the past couple weeks, but i did have a chance to sketch and scan this little piece. its 6" x 6" pencil on wood, to be painted soon with acrylics.

im trying to keep up on the "small paintings, lots of painting" concept.

I will be at Pop Monster in Torrance this Saturday, and I need to find time this week to organize all my junk and make sure I have enough prints. Tonight is the first time since last Wednesday that ive gotten home before 1030pm! Anyway, enough complaining...thanks for reading

H to the Eisen. B to the E erg

so i've got a few shows/conventions coming up in the next couple months. i want to come correct with a lot of new stuff, especially traditional work...traditional work that would be affordable enough for folks to own an original. ive been enjoying painting on wood, so my plan is to produce a decent amount of small paintings. that way, i could get a lot of small projects done, stay fresh, and build a small army of "paint-sketches".

so tonight i started a 4" x 4" wood panel. I've been watching a lot of "Breaking Bad" the last couple weeks, and decided to try my hand at a Heisenberg piece. I didnt give him his hat...maybe thats a mistake.

original photo

and run through an instagram filter.

its good. not the sketch, i mean just that im looking forward to painting a BUNCH of small things quickly, instead of laboring on large projects. and its not about the money or selling things, its just about producing a variety of traditional work that is actually accessible to people who are into that stuff.

should be posting more very soon.

"Give me all the bacon and eggs you have."

I've been wanting to do a Ron Swanson rendering/print, so tonight I tried my hand at this gentleman's likeness. I don't think this will be my "final" piece, but I thought it was a decent sketch. I spent maybe an hour and a half on this

I'm happy to have Photoshop back. I bought a new, powerful computer...my first Mac, and have been struggling with getting things set up properly. I haven't used a Mac besides computer lab time in college, so basic navigation has been a bit...hmm...difficult. funny, i guess old habits die hard.

anyhoo, glad to have my software back, and looking forward to getting some things together for my upcoming events! convention season, here i come!

thank you

sharing is caring

as promised, here are a couple scans from a couple pieces ive finished recently

first, i call this one "Freedom", and it is painted on a kitchen cutting board...

and next, my Street Fighter piece, which is still untitled.

i plan to make a few prints of the Street Fighter piece to sell at conventions and online.

anyway, this feels like a boring post and im not feeling all that witty. so thats it
thanks

Johnny Cakes & Liquor

Casey and i finished Pancakes & Booze night 2. It was a lot of fun, and I felt like i was actually able to accomplish a decent amount of work as i sat at our table. i finished off my street fighter piece, and got a few sketch cards done as well.

here is the street fighter painting in photograph form...

here is a "Slippy" (from Star Fox) sketch card...

a commissioned "Back to the Future" sketch card...

and a Ron Swanson sketch card...

and a picture of me working at the show.

as always, pancakes & booze was a good time. i will definitely consider going back next time the show is in town. i got to meet a lot of nice folks, passed out some business cards, and sold some prints. overall SUCCESS
