i went over to my boy Casey's house today, and we both worked on some 'art.' i finished up my work in progress 'tentacle love' piece (see below) and started on a new piece. for now i just have a sketch on canvas, this is what i came up with for my next piece. it is 16" x 16"
i like this one so far. im feeling like i want to render this one digitally, so my plan is to wait until after i can scan this sketch at work before i commit it to paint.
here are a couple detail images
enjoy

new noodles
4th post tonight! what!
actually, its after midnight, so this is my FIRST post of tomorrow
i did some quick sketching on a new canvas last week, and tonight i tightened it up and started with some light painting. so far so good. the canvas is 8" x 8" and i'll be painting with acrylics as usual. i might do some quick color studies in photoshop, but i think i know what i want this to look like
the sketch...
the early painting...
also, for anyone interested, i have Instagram and Twitter accounts...
@iamwheatking
where i like to pop up photos of my works in progress as well. plus, instagram adds those sweet, stylish filters
thanks

real deal
art zombie
2 shows, 1 weekend
so this past weekend i participated in 2 shows,
pancakes & booze:
a lot of fun. it was a 2-day event that took place in a pretty large rented warehouse type space. they had a TON of art, a bar, live music, free custom pancakes ( i got blueberry and chocolate chips), and a santa-themed bikini fashion show. i spent several hours there...it was fun.
in the spirit of time-saving, since i was confirmed for the show so late, i finished 2 pieces i had already started and displayed them along with a piece I had finished in october.
price...less @ the hive:
awesome show. the 'price...less' show was cool because all the pieces were under $250, and there were several full single-artist shows there as well. Crowded Teeth (michelle romo) had a full wall of work, and the usual in-house artist work was good as well.
enough typing, im bored of it.

hand-me-downs DONE
11" x 14" acrylic on canvas
this painting is done. i ditched the background because it just wasnt working. i ended up going to a simpler background to highlight the characters and to help their colors pop. the 'open door and lit hallway' had some meaning to it, but whatever...it truly wasnt working
ill be off to the gallery tomorrow afternoon to deliver it for next weekend's show. honestly, im kinda just happy to get this piece out of my hair. i spent way too long on it for how big it is and for how much it will be listed to sell for. i wont get a chance to scan it until after the show (assuming no one buys it), so for now it is here in photograph form
thanks

old, new
hello there folks
for anyone actually reading this, bare with me as it will be a long one...
sneak peak! so you dont lose interest
im putting 3 pieces up at the Pancakes and Booze show on December 2nd & 3rd. that means i have a TON of painting to do so i can drop them off at the venue on december 1st...the day before the show.
so, i decided my best plan of action would be to pick up an unfinished painting that i kinda like, and finish it.
also, as i know about myself, i tend to not work too hard on my stuff unless i am forced to. so this was a golden opportunity to force myself into figuring out and finishing this work-in-progress that i felt had some promise.
so tonight i will be posting this painting in 3 stages of development.
Stage 1 (i figured out this was started in April 2011!!! what! thats forever ago)...
funny you can see another painting behind this one. if it is familiar to you, thank you for following along for the past year!
laying down colors, figuring out shadows...
now onto stage 2...
more colors.
i didnt have a clear idea for the background yet. my thought was that he was running/falling/dancing down some alley...
i remember being frustrated here for a couple reasons:
1.) i didnt know what i was doing
2.) the paint wasnt coating very well! it was at this point that i vowed NOT to ever sketch with these black, waxy crayon-type pencils that i like. when i got into it with this much YELLOW, the sketch seemed impossible to cover.
and, tonight was stage 3...
more shading and development of reflected light etc.
this picture shows the proportions of the canvas, which i like. it is 36" x 12" so that in itself helps to add something dynamic
im not at all happy with the quality of these photos, but i have a hard time finding a great place to photograph in my apartment. i always paint at night, and i prefer dim lighting in my home.
ill get a truer-to-life image when this is done and i can scan it.
SO! there you have it. thank you for making it all the way to the end of this post. and, ill post the final piece when i think its done.
goodnight!

coming to the end
ive been painting this canvas, sort of battling with the background and the contrast of the thing. and this is where i am.
first, the background was this easter-egg pastel pink and purple. fine
come on
so i tried out some colors in photoshop...
technology, use it!
and sort of followed in real paint
its different
thanks

new piece
tonight i started a new piece for a show at The Hive in downtown los angeles in december. so far ive gotten a good start on the sketch, so i thought id post up my progress. it will be 11" x 14" acrylic on canvas
the show is called "Price...Less" and the pieces have to be 11" x 14" or smaller, and priced at less than $250. so, i figured id pick up an 11" x 14" canvas and go for as big a painting as theyd allow.
im thinking of doing a few small pieces with the hopes of getting all of them into the show. also, the pieces will stay up all month to be featured in the los angeles Artwalk
anyway, here is my progress...
full canvas
close-up bottom...
and top
see yall when ive gotten more done
edit: looking at it on my monitor, id like to adjust the pose of the 'fisted' hand in the bottom left corner. it looks too big and clumsy

birthday robot
my 'assignment' tonight was to draw a transformer for a young 4-year old fella named Johnny. i figured, you cant go wrong with optimus prime, so this is what i ended up with.
i struggled a little at first, so i resorted to deforming an existing optimus image to use as an underlay.
cheating? maybe.
im happy with the results. i spent a little over an hour on it...just a quick sketch with basic coloring, so its whatevs
thanks

its business, baby!
i know this is a horrible picture, but i need to provide a link to an image of my painting to the gallery it will be shown at...i assume just so they have visual reference for which painting is mine when it sells for millions of dollars.
i dont have a website, so this is pretty much the only place i could post this so i could give them a link.
However! you can see the awesome frame my dad made for me. thanks pops!

monster part III
Thursday, September 22, 2011
part 2, part 2
i wanted to keep a work-in-progress log on this acrylic painting, because im excited for the show. however, i dont want to REVEAL the whole thing (i know, kinda dumb) before the show, especially since its only like 2 weeks from now.
so, here is stage 2 of the painting. showing the same portion of the piece as the earlier drawing but whatever.
im trying to get a lot done in these early days, because im scared of missing my deadline. i made a lot of progress tonight, which is encouraging...so im feeling pretty good about it at this point.
more coming soon!

glug, glug! real monsters
i recently got confirmation that i will be in a gallery show on october 8th in orange county. ill post more details when i get them, but for now i wanted to post a little teaser image of the preliminary drawing i'll be painting on top of...
the theme of the show is "monsters"
like i said, just a little teaser, but ill post more process images as i get a little deeper into the painting. it is on a 15" x 30" canvas and ill be using acrylic paints, as usual
also, im excited to say that master carpenter, Ian Wilson (my pops) will be building the frame for me

adventureman returns!
just wanted to drop this in, because i added a background and am currently considering this drawing 'done'
also, i wanted to announce my movement to utilize technology to 'take it to the next level'. this means i've created a facebook page for my drawings and whatnot, as well as begin to sync twitter and all these crazy pages together, as well as open an online store!
WHAT! its going to take me awhile to really understand how to do all this stuff seamlessly, and hopefully i dont make too big a fool out of myself in the process. all of these elements are in their infancy, but someday i think i can make it work as a well-oiled machine...just like me
thanks!
